Discover the city

In our Free Tour of the Jewish Quarter we will discover why the Jews settled in the city of Girona a thousand years ago. We will walk through its alleys and talk about its tortuous history, from its beginning to the present day. In the Free Tour of the Jewish Quarter we walk through the old town of Girona and explore in depth the boundaries of the neighborhood. This visit covers the entire call, an extension not excessively large but dense in history. After all, we will tell not only about their stay in the city and the martyrdoms to which they were subjected, but also where they came from and why they ended up in Girona. In addition, we will be able to see where the most relevant places were located, such as the 3 synagogues that the city had until 1492.

Points of Interest

The streets of Cúndaro and San Lorenzo

They are the only original streets that are preserved today of the original Jewish quarter. Each of these streets is approximately one thousand years old.

Jewish Quarter

In these narrow cobblestone streets the Jews of Girona lived through the turbulent times of the Black Death, the persecution of the Inquisition and finally their subsequent expulsion by the Catholic Monarchs. If one knows where to look, there is still the mark of a people that left its mark on Girona.

Jewish Center

It is the current synagogue. In addition, in its walls we can still see the notches in the stone of the mezuzahs.

The Garden of the Germans

It is the most magical place in the city, as this garden is surrounded by medieval ruins. Here is also the Gironella Tower, a key place used by the Jews of the city to avoid the lynchings of the fourteenth century.
